At NEAD HEALTH Colon and Pilonidal Clinic, we manage all forms of pilonidal disease. We drain acute pilonidal abscesses and perform traditional pilonidal cyst excision as well as newer minimally invasive techniques in the management of pilonidal disease.

Bascom Cleft Lift Procedure

The traditional pilonidal cyst excisions we offer is the Bascom Cleft Lift Procedure for Pilonidal Disease. Dr. Umoh is experienced in performing this procedure for primary, recurrent, and complex pilonidal disease. It is associated with very low recurrence and good cosmetic results.

Endoscopic Pilonidal Sinus Treatment (EPSiT)

This is ideal for some primary pilonidal sinuses. Dr Umoh is experienced in performing this procedure. EPSiT has been found to be associated with quicker recovery and return to normal activities.

What is a pilonidal cyst?

A pilonidal cyst is a chronic infective process located at the tailbone and usually contains hair and debris. The word “pilonidal” was derived from the Latin words – pilus (meaning hair) and nidus (meaning nest). It is believed to be due to embedding of hair in the skin at this location.

How does it present?

Pilonidal disease can be asymptomatic or present in one of the following ways:

• Pain at the tailbone
• Redness, swelling and abscess at the tailbone area
• Chronic drainage of blood / pus from the tailbone area

What are the treatment options?

Most pilonidal cysts will need to be treated surgically. Any abscess would need to be drained. Definitive treatment includes excision or ablation of pilonidal tissue.
